R2R2R Challenge
During the year-end holiday season of 2024, my wife, a friend, and I embarked on an unforgettable backpacking journey at the Grand Canyon. This adventure, known as the Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim (R2R2R) challenge, pushed our physical and mental limits while immersing us in the breathtaking beauty of one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders.
We began our trek at the South Rim, situated at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Descending via the South Kaibab Trail, we wound our way down approximately 7 miles to the Colorado River, marveling at sweeping canyon views along the way. From there, we crossed the valley floor, hiking an additional 7 miles to reach the Cottonwood Campground at the base of the North Rim.
After an overnight stay at Cottonwood, we tackled the steep ascent to the North Rim, climbing to an elevation of 8,241 feet. After taking in the awe-inspiring views, we retraced our steps back to Cottonwood for our second night. On the final day, we packed up all our gear, carefully ensuring we left no trace by carrying out all trash, and made the arduous return journey, ascending back to the South Rim.
Each day, we walked approximately 47,000 steps and spent 15 hours on the trail, covering a total distance of about 46 miles over the three days. With temperatures varying dramatically between the rim and the canyon floor, we prepared by packing lightweight dried food and a water filter to stay hydrated with natural water sources.
This incredible experience tested our endurance, fostered deeper connections with nature, and created memories we’ll cherish for a lifetime.
